Making waste management personal and insightful

How can we optimize knowledge about waste management for the citizens and local authorities of Limburg? Namahn helped Limburg.net to streamline their digital communications and website to create a more personalised waste management experience for citizens and to make it easier for local authorities to share their waste management information.

Design challenge

Limburg.net is an intercommunal waste management organisation. Via its digital communication channels and website in particular, Limburg.net aims to deliver a better service to citizens and local authorities. The Limburg.net website was in need of renewal. The objectives and challenges were made explicit in a framework workshop. The new website must:

  1. Give citizens easier access to specific information applying to them
  2. Enable citizens to monitor the evolution of their waste management as much as possible
  3. Enable local authorities to share relevant information

Moreover, the design must also take into account the technical possibilities and limitations of the underlying IT architecture.

Approach

After conducting field studies with citizens and local authorities, a vision and scope workshop enabled Namahn to translate what we had learned into a comprehensive list of requirements for making the online waste calendar more accessible, encouraging (correct) waste sorting and raising awareness of waste generation.

In parallel, we conducted an analysis of technical features and internal processes around content generation. The design process included preparing the technical and content aspects of the tender document for website developers.

Namahn then conducted a series of classification workshops with the team of Limburg.net based on an information inventory, designed to organise website content into comprehensive blocks of information. This resulted in a very abstract wireflow, describing the homepage and the four website sections: core message, supporting information, personal waste profile, and shop. Each of the wireflow screens received a number or a letter. The number stood for a specific conceptual design screen. The letter stood for a more generic screen design, such as a content page or list.

A potential obstacle to optimal website performance was onboarding users to the section containing their personal data. Therefore, Namahn worked on alternative verification and onboarding scenarios in addition to working out the screens in detail. With these details integrated, Namahn took to the field once again to test the designs with users. This generated some interesting changes, such as the addition of a more prominent home button, changing the shop terminology or adding an introductory paragraph to some pages.

Namahn worked closely with Limburg.net to ensure that the website was a success. We helped Limburg.net to objectively evaluate the proposals by developers and we closely followed up the development of the site. Namahn also assisted Limburg.net in the creation of a migration plan, a document supporting the migration of content from the old website or creation of content for the new environment.

Result

The website was developed and designed by an external partner and looks modern and clean. Citizens of Limburg now have a better overview of their personal waste generation and how they can reduce it. Local authorities have a clearly defined and well-organised place to share their waste management related communications.
